Decorative Collage Under Glass
The art of embellishing surfaces with decorative collage has a history spanning centuries and continents. Its roots can be traced back to 12th century China and then to Japan, becoming a popular art form in 17th century Venice and France, then in 19th century England. I cut paper, assemble and glue it to glass dishes and vases. These paper pieces are the means by which I create my designs and transform the glass vessels.
I particularly enjoy the challenges of working on three dimensional pieces. This unusual double sided technique ensures each design visible through the glass interior is as unique as the one that backs it. The delicate gluing of both sides of the paper collage is followed by a long process of varnishing and polishing.
